—SEVENTEEN—
Emma's father spotted them the minute they stepped inside the tent and about ten seconds after they dropped their clasped hands between them. A slow song filtered over the speakers and just about everybody was dancing; even Kerri was spinning Gage around the floor. Emma caught a glimpse of her mother with Banks Montgomery and she knew what was coming.
"I'm gonna take this pretty little girl off your hands for a few minutes, Noah." Emma's father held his hand out for her and winked at her companion before pulling her toward the dance floor. While his technique was lacking, he made up for it in heart, and he rarely sat out a song once the floor was warmed up. Fast or slow, it didn't matter. She'd danced with her father hundreds of times. He would joke that he had two left feet but that didn't interfere with his love of the music. With one arm still in his brace, it made for an awkward posture, but he held her hand with his good arm and she held them together with a hand lightly on his shoulder.
"You having fun, sweetie?"
"It's a beautiful wedding. Completely what I imagined."
"Beautiful bride, too."
She nodded, and turned her head to see where Dane and Ren were dancing, barely moving. He held her close and she rested her head on his chest, completely wrapped up in one another as if nothing else mattered.
"I think they make each other really happy. And Dane deserves that," she concluded, turning back to her father.
"I know a few other people that deserve to be happy."
"Daddy..."
He shook his head, gave her a little spin, and then drew her in close again.
"Does being back home make you happy, Emma?"
She didn't reply quickly. Right now, still warm with the memory of Noah's hands in her hair, on her waist, his mouth on hers—right now, she could say she was happy in Three Rivers. But if she let herself think too much about it, it was hard to shake the memories of how she'd felt when she left, regardless of the apology that had made her ache. Had he really changed?
"I promise, I'm not going to try to guilt you into staying, and I don't know what Denver looked like for you, but seeing you spending time with Noah and Stephanie, riding Alamo...it does make me wonder what's so bad about Three Rivers," he continued.
She considered her father's words as she caught sight of Noah, who had taken her mother from Banks. She was laughing like a madwoman while Noah whirled her around the dance floor, a few beats too fast for the music that was playing. Her mother had always loved Noah, had probably never stopped, and if Emma was honest, she probably hadn't either. She put on a brave smile for her father.
"Nothing, actually. Nothing."
"Good. I know you have a contract to finish, but I'd like to see you around a little more often."
"I know, Daddy. You will."
In truth, coming home hadn't been as bad as she had anticipated.
